Acquired Brain Injury

Aims

We aim to work with patients and families in order to achieve the best possible recovery from brain injury.  We aim to achieve the best circumstances for return to home, work or school, recreation and the community.  Our review and follow-up systems as well as our established links with a wide range of community services and agencies, cater for the longer term needs of people with acquired brain injury.

Some of the things our patients do

  • Physical re-training and conditioning, often involving a special gym and activity program.
  • A range of structured tasks involving different aspects of thinking and memory to enable strengths and needs to be identified.  This neuropsycholgocial assessment evaluates the memory, intellectual, emotional and behaviour changes that can occur after a brain injury.  This information helps in developing the rehab program and measuring future progress.
  • Developing problem solving skills and learning to compensate for memory, thinking and behaviour difficulties.
Exercises to restore speech and language skills such as clarity of speech.
  • Receive help with swallowing problems by, for example, altering foods or posture.
  • Daily living skills retraining, including areas such as driving,  home and leisure activities.
  • Supportive adjustment and educational counselling to help clients in dealing with the complex and broad issues associated with a head injury.
  • Work preparation and return to work programs including gradual rebuilding of stamina and skills for the workplace.
