Hydrotherapy
Aims
Hydrotherapy is part of many of The Victorian Rehabilitation Centre’s rehabilitation programs.
It is a form of physiotherapy conducted in a heated pool (32-34°C) where the properties of water are used to achieve specific therapeutic goals. All exercises are with the head above water.
Benefits of warm water exercise
- Relief of tension
- Improved heart and lung functions
- Improved muscle strength and endurance and general fitness level through low impact exercise
- Improved posture
- General relaxation
Suitable patients
Hydrotherapy is therefore ideal for:
- Arthritis
- Chronic pain
- Musculoskeletal problems
- Fitness training
Members of our team
The hydrotherapy sessions are conducted by qualified physiotherapists who guide patients through their hydrotherapy exercises. Many of our physiotherapists hold post graduate hydrotherapy qualifications.
Some of the things our patients do
It is not necessary for our patients to be able to swim. Exercises can be done in either shallow or deep water. A clinician will be at the pool with patients at all times. Because of buoyancy, water exercises can be very gentle and movement in water is easier than on land. Together with the effect of the warmth, this helps to reduce pain and muscle spasms.
Self-help hydrotherapy program
We offer a Self-Help Hydrotherapy Program for participants to participate in an independent water exercise program. Self-help participants are entirely responsible for their own exercise program. Participants have full use of all hydrotherapy equipment at the pool.
To make a referral
We accept referrals from medical practitioners, allied health professionals, nursing staff and insurance companies. Individuals and families may also make referrals. To make a referral, simply call (03) 9566 2777.
Further information for health professionals
By the combination of physiological changes in immersion in warm water and the application of hydrostatic and hydrodynamic principles, the physiotherapist can use water specific exercises to achieve specific therapeutic goals.
Professional Training
The Victorian Rehabilitation Centre in conjunction with Latrobe University regularly offers Post Graduate Hydrotherapy Courses for fully qualified physiotherapists.
