Patients Rights and Responsibilities


You have a right:
To be treated with dignity and respect cognisant of your religious and cultural practices, including the right to personal privacy.

To an explanation from your doctor of your illness or condition, of what treatment is available and the results and meaning of tests or examinations.

To refuse any investigations, treatment or surgery. However, if you choose to leave the hospital against medical advice, you will be asked to sign a disclaimer. The responsibility of your actions would rest entirely with you.

To information about the drugs you are receiving, their uses and anticipated side effects.

To the names and professional status of any person providing your care.

To confidentiality of personal and medical information.

To refuse to be questioned or examined by students.

To nominate the person(s) and/or next of kin to be notified, and provided you so wish, they should be promptly, reliably and courteously informed.

To consent based on adequate information obtained for anaesthetics, surgical procedure, unusual medications, hazardous assessment procedures, participation in any research project, photographic and audiovisual recording and other procedures where consent is required by law.

To seek a second opinion.

To express a complaint or concern by contacting the Department Manager or the General Manager/Director of Nursing. Patients have a responsibility:
To provide the necessary information to your doctor and hospital staff to enable them to provide the care or treatment necessary.

To co-operate in the process of the provision of care and to report any changes in your condition to the nursing staff or your doctor.

For following the treatment plan recommended by the practitioner primarily responsible for their care.

To show consideration for other patients and staff including adhering to the hospital visiting hours and advising your family and friends likewise, and by observing the Alcohol Rules and Smoking Rules of the hospital.
