Graduate Nurse Program

The aim of the Graduate Nurse Program is to provide a program that develops the confidence and competence of the Graduate Nurse and effectively facilitates the transition from the role of beginner to advanced beginner. This is achieved by:

  • Recognising and incorporating individual learning needs and personal attributes into a responsive supported education program
  • Facilitating the transition from student to registered nurse - Division 2 in a supportive clinical environment, utilising clinical teachers, peer support and preceptorship
  • Providing documented evidence of each graduate nurse’s clinical experience as part of their professional portfolio of development

The objectives of the Graduate Nurse Program are:

  1. To assist the Graduate Nurse to function in accordance to the Australian and Midwifery Council standards (ANMC), which are to –
  • Function in accordance with legislation and common law, practice ethically, protect the rights of those in their care, and accept responsibility for their actions;
  • Enhance the professional practice of self others and be aware of best practice to improve standards of care;
  • Carry out a comprehensive and accurate nursing assessment, formulate a plan of care, implement that plan of care, identify outcomes and evaluate progress towards these outcomes; 
  • Maintain an environment of safety and security, communicate effectively, manage the care of a group of patients effectively and delegate care as required.
  1. To encourage the Graduate Nurse to use reflection and evidence-based practice.
  2. To support the Graduate Nurse to develop behaviours for life-long learning.

During the Graduate Nurse Program it is expected you will:

  • Complete the mandatory education program provided by each hospital
  • Adhere to the organization’s Code of Conduct
  • Demonstrate knowledge of, and compliance with, the organization’s policies and clinical guidelines
  • Work collaboratively within the health team
  • Act as an advocate for the individual, ensuring the maintenance of dignity and integrity, while promoting the client’s right to make informed health care choices
  • Demonstrate the ability to reflect on nursing practice, thus promoting ongoing professional development of themselves and their colleagues
  • Apply lifelong learning strategies to promote personal and professional development

Allamanda has a graduate retention rate of approx 80%.

The graduate program offers structured orientation, skill development, debriefing and support mechanisms.

Graduates have an opportunity to rotate through specialised wards and areas such as Theatre, CCU and ECC over 3 sites, providing varied learning environments. This opportunity consolidates the theoretical component of their university-based training and provides depth in their scope of practice in their graduate year. 

Allamanda recognises the need for continued self-development and is able to provide support through providing in-service education sessions and financing course costs & paid leave for attendance &/or study.
