Feeding your baby

It is Newcastle Private Hospital’s policy to encourage breast feeding on demand and “rooming in”, in accordance with the recommendations of the World Health Organisation. Our highly experienced midwives will assist you with all aspects of feeding and post natal care. However, we respect the right of each mother to determine how she wishes to feed her baby.

Rooming In

Rooming in is recommended to enable you to learn skills in feeding and caring for your baby.

Lactation Service

A Lactation Service is held at Newcastle Private Hospital to assist mothers with feeding problems or settling difficulties.

Parenting Education in Hospital

During your stay at Newcastle Private Hospital  you will have access to education on parenting topics such as:

•  Feeding Your Baby
•  Wrapping your baby and nappy changing
•  Relaxation bathing and infant settling
•  The benefits of post natal exercises and physiotherapy

This education is provided by video or group sessions. They are informal discussions that encourage new mothers to speak freely about their experiences or any concerns they may have in a supportive environment.

Physiotherapist / Social Worker / Psychologist

We have a Physiotherapist, Social Worker and Psychologist available for consultation by appointment. Should you wish to access this service please speak to a staff member.

Massage Therapy

A masseuse (Registered Nurse) provides soothing relaxation or remedial massage by appointment. The fee for this service will be billed to you directly by the masseuse.

Photography Service

An independent professional photographer is available on request to photograph your baby. Photography costs will be billed to you directly by the photographer.

Going Home with a Baby

This usually occurs on day four or five for a normal delivery, and on day six for a Caesarean Section. Your Obstetrician will arrange an extension of stay if this is necessary for medical reasons.

We ask mothers to arrange their departure prior to 10.00am on the day of discharge as this assists with accommodation for incoming patients.
It’s normal for new mothers to feel a little anxious about taking baby home. Remember, we’re here to help, 24 hours a day. If you have any concerns when you arrive home you can always talk to one of our experienced midwives in the Post Natal Unit. Contact the midwives by phone the hospital on 4941 9300.

Before Discharge we will provide you with the relevant community services available.

Post Natal Discussion Group

All mothers discharged from Newcastle Private Hospital are welcome and encouraged to attend the off-site Post Natal Discussion Groups. All the information regarding these groups will be provided to you during your stay.
