The pharmacist visits the wards on a daily basis to review patient medication needs. He / she is available for patient education when required. Please let your nursing staff know if you need to speak to the pharmacist or if you require an information sheet printout about your medication. Please ensure that you fully understand your medications prior to discharge.
Please ensure that any medication that you normally take at home is brought into hospital with you, as you will be charged by the pharmacy if you require extra prescriptions.
You will be responsible for the cost of any medications that have been provided by our pharmacy service that are for conditions not directly related to your reason for admission. You will be billed for these items on discharge.
Medication not presented in the prescribed container or packaging without identification cannot be administered by nursing staff. Webster packs and dosettes that have already been prepared cannot be used by our staff and alternative arrangements will have to be made. We apologise for any inconvenience that this causes, but have designed this policy to ensure your safety.
Patient medications are secured at all times in the medication compartment of your beside locker. This drawer is for medication only and it is recommended that it not be used for storing valuables. Only registered nurses have access to these locked drawers. It is their job to administer your medication. Please do not self-medicate, even if you are used to doing so at home, to avoid the inadvertent doubling-up of medications. Please ensure that your medications are safe from young visitors.

Security and safety
There is a range of measures that are taken at this facility for your security.
Entrances are locked each night at 10.30pm and remain locked until 6.30am. Anyone who wishes to enter the hospital after hours must speak to the Nursing Co-ordinator via the external intercom system who will monitor their access to the facility.
Duress alarms are available for staff use.
Security patrols are conducted each night and security officers check both the inside and outside of the facility.
Our staff receive education and training to ensure they are able to address emergency situations.
The hospital has fire detectors in all areas and staff are well trained to handle problems and evacuate patients if necessary. Staff have been trained in the use of evacuation harnesses and manual handling aids. These evacuations are practiced from time to time, as is the use of fire extinguishers and it is mandatory that staff attend these sessions. The fire and evacuation alarms and public address system are tested regularly. These tests can be loud and we ask for your understanding.
