Research Program - Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is a potential new treatment for depression and other psychiatric disorders. It has gained increasing attention in recent years as research is progressively conducted to establish its role in treatment programs.  There is an emerging consensus that TMS does have antidepressant activity and may play a useful role in the treatment of patients with depression.  At The Victoria Clinic TMS is available under the supervision of Associate Professor Paul Fitzgerald as part of a series of clinical trials.

Day Program

The General Day Program offers an environment of group therapy aimed at promoting recovery from mental illness within a community setting.  Day Programs are offered as open groups where new patients can commence at any time.  The General Day Program aims to provide supportive psychotherapy for individuals recently discharged from an acute care setting to independent living.  The goal is to prevent recurrence or relapse of symptoms by raising awareness as well as to promote long term rehabilitation for those with ongoing mental health issues.

Individuals are assessed prior to admission to the Day Programs to identify current issues and need for community support.  Staff work closely with treating psychiatrist and other mental health clinicians, thus maximising supports already in place.

The Program promotes a balanced healthy lifestyle with an emphasis on general health and recreation whilst improving basic living skills to optimise independent living.

Outreach Services

The Outreach Program provides specific therapeutic support to patients who need assistance to stay well and reach their potential.  The objective of the Program is to assist patient recovery through treatment and rehabilitation in their home and own community and minimising disruption to their lives by reducing the length and frequency of hospital stays.

The Outreach Clinician works with patients and their family members or carers to manage mental health issues and assist the patient with their life skills.
